There are many differences between every human, but there is one thing that is common amongst those that choose to stand out in a crowd. That is their metal. Whether it is a buckle, a championship ring, a cross, a custom car, or a body piercing, one’s metal is a symbol of who they are and what they aspired to become. Metal is a badge, a snapshot into one’s psyche. It’s about pushing it to the limit, having the guts to hang it out there and a reminder that says that you came, you saw, you kicked butt and you’ll be back. That’s Tin Haul: wear your metal out. A little like life, it seems we find projects that become more and more complicated—continually adding another color or two; throwing some more bling in with foil or rhinestones; pretty much anything to complicate things. So sometimes it’s important to slow down a little and smell the roses; to enjoy the simple things in life. The project we will describe here is just one of those simple things. Back to basics, as it were.

Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, we returned from nearly three weeks on the road working a turnkey installation consulting gig in Caracas, Venezuela. This was the culmination of what turned out to be a five-year project. Early in 1997 we were introduced by a leading equipment manufacturer to the client. Larry Frank from Lymtex was ready to start up an automated screen print operation.

As you may, or may not know, we recently spent a week with the first Printwear Shop Makeover winner in Plymouth, Mich. We spent five days with our new friends Nancy, Rose and Gary at Heritage Logo Works. While streamlining the process and dialing in some new techniques, we also worked up a project interesting enough to make it into our Software to Substrate monthly column. (Check out the extensive coverage of the makeover on page 60, this issue.) Read more at (via Grey Scale Screen Printing | Printwear)

I have been pulling a squeegee now for more than 25 years. When friends ask me why screen printing, I tell them “I guess it’s too late to be a doctor.” It’s all I know. But, I also realize that a lot has changed since I first started. Of course, trends change—sailboats and surfboards have been replaced with skulls and filigree—but also, I’m not just a screen printer anymore. Somewhere along the way I became a garment embellisher. Q: Holy-moly! I nearly electrocuted myself the other day. I was catching shirts at the end of the dryer and I touched the zipper on the belt. The static shock just about knocked me over. What can I do to prevent this in the future?

A: Just to be on the safe side, I’d recommend you contact your manufacturer and/or a licensed electrician to make sure the dryer is properly grounded. Chances are, though—especially if you work in a dry climate—that your dryer and garments have built up a static charge from all that friction and heat. You sometimes get that same static shock when you separate your socks from you shirts in you own clothes dryer, just not quite as strong. How do you fix the problem at home? Pop in a sheet of Bounce, right? Try running a few sheets of household anti-static-cling sheets over your dryer belt at the shop. It works, I’m tellin’ ya!
